REGULATIONS


1. Organisation

The European Marathon – Aveiro is organised by the Aveiro City Council and GlobalSport, the commercial brand of GSX Portugal Lda., with the support and involvement of the Central Portugal Regional Tourism Board and the Ílhavo City Council.

2. Races

There will be four races, as follows:

Marathon – 42.195 km, for participants born in 2005 or earlier
Half Marathon – 21.0975 km, for participants born in 2007 or earlier
Mini-Marathon – approximately 10 km, for participants born in 2007 or earlier
Walk – 5 km, open to all age groups and non-competitive. Wearing the official event T-shirt during the walk is mandatory. Only duly registered participants may take part.

3. Date and Time

The event will take place on 27 April 2025.

  • The 10K race starts at 08:15

  • The Marathon (42K), Half Marathon (21K) and Walk (5K) start at 08:45

4. Time Limits

The time limits are as follows:
– Marathon: 6 hours
– Half Marathon: 3 hours
– Mini-Marathon: 1 hour and 40 minutes
– Walk: 1 hour and 30 minutes

After the sweep vehicle has passed, participants who remain on the course and wish to continue do so at their own risk and must comply with the Portuguese Highway Code.

Any participant reaching the 23rd kilometre of the marathon after 11:55, or the 33rd kilometre after 13:15, must hand in their bib and/or board the sweep vehicle, as they will have exceeded the time limit set by the organisers to complete the marathon distance.

The pace of the Walk will be monitored by the organisers.

5. Registration

The data entered during registration is the sole responsibility of the participant, who shall be fully accountable for its accuracy, truthfulness and authenticity.

Registrations are only confirmed upon receipt of payment. You can obtain your proof of registration by logging into your personal account at events.globalsport.pt > My Account > Completed Registrations and selecting Maratona da Europa – Aveiro.

5.1 – Payment must be made within the deadlines stated on the registration platform. After this deadline, unpaid registrations will not be accepted by the organisers. If payment is not made on time, the registration must be reopened at events.globalsport.pt to generate new payment references, with the updated prices and conditions in effect at that time.

5.2 – If payment is made after the specified deadline, the registration will be cancelled. You will have up to 30 days after registration to request a refund by emailing info@globalsport.pt. A service fee of €10 will be charged for "registration management costs".

5.2.1 – Any changes to registration details will incur a fee of €5 and are only permitted until 20 March 2025.

5.2.2 – No refunds will be issued for cancelled registrations at any time.

The transfer or sale of bibs/registrations to third parties is strictly prohibited. The organisation will block future registrations from individuals who engage in such practices, identified through the use of a bib by someone other than the registered participant.

5.3 – The organisation reserves the right to assign sub-elite bibs to invited participants. Any registered athlete may request a sub-elite bib for the marathon or half marathon by providing proof of having completed, in the last three years, a marathon in under 2h30 (men) or 2h40 (women), or a half marathon in under 1h10 (men) or 1h20 (women). Proof must be sent to edgar.silvano@globalsport.pt by 1 April 2024 with the subject: "Sub-elite Bib".

The organisation may, at any time, suspend or extend deadlines or add to or limit the number of registrations for the event depending on technical or structural needs or availability, without prior notice.

The data used for results will be the information provided at the time of registration.

IMPORTANT: The participant expressly consents to their basic personal data being provided to the insurance company responsible for the required accident and liability cover, and to the publication of results from the event's various races. In accordance with data protection legislation, participants may exercise their right to access, rectify, delete or oppose their data by emailing GlobalSport at info@globalsport.pt.

Up to the limit of 5,000 participants per distance:

21K – €29.90
10K – €22.90
Walk – €10.00

Last week registrations (22 to 27 April 2025):
42K – €120.00
21K – €60.00
10K – €30.00
Walk – €20.00

*Partners accepting registrations at their service counters may offer special prices.
*Participants aged 9 or under: €2

NOTE: No registrations will be accepted on race day.

The listed prices are subject to additional processing fees for online registration.

In accordance with current legislation, invoices must be requested after payment, via the page where registration was completed. If registered through a partner, the invoice must be requested using the registration details emailed to you. You have three days to request the invoice. Registrations for minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult – a maximum of two minors per adult is permitted.

7. Race Pack

To collect the race pack, participants must present proof of registration and/or valid photo ID.

If the requested T-shirt size is out of stock, an alternative size will be suggested.

The race pack will be distributed on dates and at a location to be announced on the event's website. The organisers will allow bib collection on race day up to 30 minutes before the start. Race packs will only be handed over to the registered participant upon presentation of proof of registration with bib number, in either paper or digital format, which can be obtained at events.globalsport.pt > My Account > Completed Registrations.

If you are unable to collect your bib in person, someone else may collect it on your behalf by presenting the original proof of registration on one of the days prior to the race.

All registered participants must write on the back of their bib their full name, emergency contact number, and any specific health issues or medical treatment currently in place that should be considered in the event of an incident.

8. Age Categories

Marathon / Half Marathon / 10K:
Eligible participants:
– Marathon: born in 2005 or earlier
– Half Marathon and 10K: born in 2007 or earlier

  • F/M40 (ages 40–44)

  • F/M45 (ages 45–49)

  • F/M50 (ages 50–54)

  • F/M55 (ages 55–59)

  • F/M60 (ages 60 and above)

Age categories are determined based on the participant's exact age on race day.

A minimum of three participants of the same gender is required to form a category. If a category cannot be formed, the participants will be included in the next youngest category.

Walk: Open to all age groups.

9. Aid Stations

Marathon and Half Marathon:
Available every five kilometres and at the finish line. Locations may be adjusted depending on weather conditions.

10K and Walk:

One intermediate station and one at the finish line.


10. Medical Assistance

Medical teams and specialised ambulances will be present throughout the event, providing all necessary first aid support. Ongoing medical care, if required, will be provided by the National Health Service.

The organisers are required to provide sports insurance, as mandated by law, for all non-affiliated registered participants. Should a participant require treatment at a public healthcare institution, they must inform the organisers as soon as possible to activate the insurance. Failure to do so in a timely manner may result in the claim being denied. Payment of medical fees is the responsibility of the participant, although reimbursement may be possible if the insurance conditions are met.

To ensure the safe flow of participants and traffic, police forces, accredited volunteers and members of the organising team will be present along the course. Participants must follow all instructions given. Vehicles not authorised by the organisers are not allowed on the course. For safety reasons, the participation of individuals using motorised vehicles, bicycles, accompanied by animals, on skates, rollerblades or using any equipment that could pose a risk to participants is strictly prohibited. Any such persons will be removed from the event by security.

11. Services

11.1 Bag Drop

The organisers will provide a cloakroom service at the start/finish area for participants in the Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K. A race bib must be shown to deposit or collect any items. It is strongly advised not to leave any valuables or fragile items in the bags, as the organisers will not be held responsible for any lost or damaged belongings.

11.2 Showers

Showers will be available to participants at a location and time to be announced on the event's official website.

12. Results

Marathon / Half Marathon / 10K:
Results will be published on www.europemarathon.pt. These may be subject to change in the event of any discrepancies.

Walk:
There will be no individual or team results.

13. Timing

The event will use an electronic chip timing system. To ensure accurate timing, each athlete must wear their bib (containing the chip) visibly on the front of their chest throughout the entire race, in good condition.

All participants in the Marathon, Half Marathon and Mini-Marathon must use the chip provided. It is personal and non-transferable. The organisers accept no responsibility for missing results due to incorrect chip placement.

Participants will be disqualified if they:

– Use someone else's chip
– Use more than one chip
– Fail to pass through any intermediate timing checkpoints

14. Prizes

All finishers of the Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K will receive a participation medal.

Monetary prizes will be awarded in the Overall Men's and Women's categories, as well as in the following Veteran categories (M/F40, M/F45, M/F50, M/F55, M/F60). These prizes will only apply to the Marathon. For veteran prizes to be awarded, there must be at least 10 finishers of the same gender in the category.

Trophies for the top three male and female finishers in the Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K will be awarded at the podium ceremony.

Marathon participants will only be eligible to receive one prize, whether based on Overall Classification, Portuguese Classification, or Age Category Classification. The prize awarded will be the highest in value; prizes cannot be combined.

Prizes for the Marathon and Half Marathon must be claimed by the athletes within 30 days after the race. A dedicated form is available on the event website under the "Claim Prize" section. Required documentation (including an invoice or one-off service receipt) must be issued to GSX Portugal Lda, VAT number 514779012. Payment will be made within 30 days of receiving the full documentation and following the World Athletics anti-doping regulations.

All monetary prizes are subject to applicable tax regulations.

15. Jury

The race jury is appointed by the Regional Arbitration Council of the Aveiro Athletics Association.

16. Infractions

Participants will be subject to sanctions if they:

– Fail to check in at the start
– Do not complete the full course
– Do not wear their bib visibly on the front of the chest
– Falsify any registration details
– Use a bib not registered in their name
– Run on pavements or outside the designated course
– Intentionally obstruct or endanger other participants

17. Appeals

Any complaint or appeal must be submitted in writing to the race jury at the venue, within 30 minutes of the results being announced, and must be accompanied by a €100 fee. This will be refunded only if the appeal is upheld.

18. Anti-Doping Control

Participants may be subject to anti-doping testing.

19. REGULATIONS / DATA PROTECTION / LIABILITY

By confirming their registration, participants declare that they accept the current regulations, the data protection policy, and the disclaimer.

Liability Disclaimer:

By registering, the participant declares the following:

"I am in excellent health and fully capable of participating in the European Marathon – Aveiro (including the absence of any symptoms of Covid-19). I release the organisers, sponsors, and any supporting institutions from any liability for accident or injury sustained before, during, or after the event. I waive any right to take legal action against any of the entities involved. During the event, I will cooperate with the organisers to help prevent accidents.

I also authorise the organisers to use photos, videos or any other audio-visual material in which I may appear, and I accept the publication of my name in the official results, whether through the media and/or online, without expecting any payment or compensation for such use."

Participants are advised to undergo a medical examination prior to the event. By registering, they accept the inherent risks of participating in a sporting activity.

All participants give their free and unconditional consent for the use of their personal data for marketing purposes and for their image to be used in official event recordings and photographs, allowing their reproduction on media channels belonging to the organisers or third parties.

Participants' personal data will be stored in a database managed by GSX Portugal Lda, based at Rua Delminda Pinto Ribeiro, nº 17, 5050-346 Poiares – Peso da Régua. The purpose of this database is to manage personal data of individuals registered for the event.

Collected data may be shared with third parties for marketing purposes. If you wish to exercise your right to access, oppose, erase or withdraw your consent, you must do so in writing, proving your identity either by post or by email to info@globalsport.pt.

20. CANCELLATION OR POSTPONEMENT OF THE EVENT

The event may be cancelled due to circumstances beyond the organisers' control, such as natural disasters, strikes, protests, pandemics, road closures, telecommunications issues, government restrictions or legislative changes. In such cases, the organisers reserve the right to issue an official communication within 30 days of the planned event date, outlining the measures to be taken. No refunds will be issued.

Railway Crossing Note: The course includes a level crossing. According to Portuguese law, all participants are required to comply with the crossing regulations, which state that "rail vehicles have absolute right of way" and that it is forbidden to enter the crossing when there is any visual or verbal signal indicating that passage is not permitted. Any breach of these rules is considered a legal offence, for which the organisers accept no responsibility. Security staff will be present to monitor and enforce these regulations during the event.

21. Final Provisions

Any omissions in this regulation will be resolved in accordance with the General Competition Regulations of the Portuguese Athletics Federation.
